Dragon’s Breath Ammo: 25 Questions Answered (The Only FAQ You’ll Ever Need)
You saw it in John Wick 4. You saw it on YouTube. You saw it light up your entire feed at 2 AM and now you are here because you need answers. What actually is Dragon’s Breath ammo? Can you really buy it? Will it destroy your shotgun? Is it legal where you live? Can you use it for home defense? (Spoiler: please do not.)
We get it. Dragon’s Breath is one of the most searched, most viral, and most misunderstood ammunition types on the internet. And most of the information out there is either dead wrong, wildly outdated, or written by someone who has never actually fired a round.
Phoenix Rising manufactures the Super Dragon® — our original Dragon’s Breath ammunition in both 12 gauge and .410 gauge. We have been making and selling these rounds for years, and we hear the same questions over and over again. So we are putting every single one of them in one place. No fluff, no filler, just answers.
Let’s get into it.

The Basics
What is Dragon’s Breath ammo?
Dragon’s Breath is a specialty incendiary shotgun shell that launches a stream of burning particles out of the barrel when fired. The result is a massive plume of sparks and flame that can extend 200 yards or more downrange, depending on the round and conditions. It looks like a flamethrower. Because it basically is one. While generic Dragon’s Breath rounds from other manufacturers use basic magnesium compounds, Phoenix Rising’s Super Dragon® uses a proprietary incendiary load that burns hotter, flies farther, and puts every other Dragon’s Breath round on the market to shame.
Unlike standard shotgun ammunition, Dragon’s Breath does not fire a solid projectile or pellets. The payload is entirely pyrotechnic. The burning particles create a spectacular visual display, but they have no meaningful ballistic penetration. The purpose is visual effect, not terminal performance.
What is Dragon’s Breath made of?
Generic Dragon’s Breath rounds from other manufacturers typically use basic magnesium pellets or zirconium-magnesium shards as their incendiary payload. Phoenix Rising’s Super Dragon® is different. It uses a proprietary incendiary compound that we do not disclose. What we can tell you is the results: the Super Dragon® burns at over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit — significantly hotter than competing Dragon’s Breath products on the market. For context, paper ignites at 451°F and wood at around 500°F. The proprietary compound also delivers a longer, more intense flame plume with range exceeding 200 yards, far beyond what standard magnesium-based Dragon’s Breath rounds can achieve.
What gauges does Dragon’s Breath come in?
The most common chambering is 12 gauge 2¾ inch, which is the standard shotgun shell size and compatible with the vast majority of 12 gauge shotguns. Phoenix Rising also manufactures the Super Dragon® in .410 gauge 2½ inch for use in .410 bore shotguns and compatible revolvers like the Taurus Judge. Some manufacturers also produce 20 gauge variants, though these are less widely available.
Who makes Dragon’s Breath ammo?
Dragon’s Breath is produced exclusively by smaller specialty ammunition manufacturers. Major brands like Federal, Winchester, Remington, and Hornady do not make it. Phoenix Rising is one of the original and most recognized producers with our Super Dragon® line, which has become the benchmark for Dragon’s Breath quality and performance. Other manufacturers include KIR Ammo and various regional specialty loaders.
Shooting It
What shotguns can fire Dragon’s Breath?
Dragon’s Breath rounds can be safely fired from any 12 gauge shotgun with an improved cylinder bore or modified choke. Pump-action shotguns are the preferred platform because Dragon’s Breath shells typically do not generate enough recoil energy to reliably cycle the action of a semi-automatic shotgun. If you fire Dragon’s Breath from a semi-auto, expect to manually rack the action after each shot. Bolt-action, break-action, and single-shot shotguns also work perfectly.
Will Dragon’s Breath damage my barrel?
No. This is one of the most common misconceptions about Dragon’s Breath, and it is flat-out wrong. The Super Dragon® does not damage shotgun barrels. The incendiary particles exit the barrel at relatively low velocity and do not make sustained contact with the bore surface. There is no solid projectile grinding against the bore walls. The shell simply contains the proprietary incendiary compound that is expelled by the powder charge. After firing, you may notice some light residue in the barrel — a standard cleaning with a bore brush and patches will remove it completely. Dragon’s Breath will not pit, score, erode, or otherwise damage a properly maintained shotgun barrel. Period.
How far does the flame reach?
The Super Dragon® produces a visible flame plume that extends 200 yards or more downrange. The most dramatic effect occurs in the first 50 to 100 yards, where the burning particles are densely concentrated and the visual display is at its most intense. Beyond that distance, the particles begin to spread and gradually extinguish as they lose velocity and cool. Wind will significantly affect the shape and reach of the flame pattern. Compared to generic Dragon’s Breath rounds from other manufacturers — which typically max out around 100 feet — the Super Dragon®’s 200+ yard range is a completely different class of performance.
Does Dragon’s Breath have any recoil?
Very little. Because the payload consists of lightweight metallic particles rather than a heavy slug or dense shot pattern, the felt recoil from a Dragon’s Breath round is noticeably lighter than standard buckshot or slug loads. It is comparable to firing a light birdshot load. This low recoil is also why Dragon’s Breath rounds often fail to cycle semi-automatic actions.
Can I fire Dragon’s Breath from a Taurus Judge?
Yes — using .410 gauge Dragon’s Breath rounds. The Taurus Judge is chambered for both .45 Long Colt and .410 bore shotgun shells, making it one of the most popular platforms for .410 Dragon’s Breath. Phoenix Rising’s Super Dragon® .410 Gauge 2½ inch rounds ($29.99 per 5-round pack) are compatible with the Judge and produce a dramatic flame effect from a compact revolver platform.

Legality
Is Dragon’s Breath ammo legal?
It depends entirely on your state. At the federal level, Dragon’s Breath ammunition is not explicitly banned and does not fall under NFA destructive device classification in most interpretations. However, several states have passed their own laws specifically prohibiting Dragon’s Breath shotgun shells by name or under broader incendiary ammunition bans.
What states is Dragon’s Breath illegal in?
As of 2026, Dragon’s Breath ammunition is prohibited in the following states and jurisdictions:
Alaska
California
Florida (specifically bans Dragon’s Breath shotgun shells by name under FL §790.31)
Hawaii
Illinois
Iowa
Maryland
Massachusetts
New Jersey
New York
Washington D.C.
In all other states, Dragon’s Breath is generally legal to purchase and possess. However, local city and county ordinances may add additional restrictions, and temporary burn bans or fire regulations may prohibit the use of incendiary ammunition even in states where possession is legal. Always verify your local laws before purchasing.
Phoenix Rising does not ship Dragon’s Breath ammunition to any state or jurisdiction where it is prohibited.
Why is Dragon’s Breath illegal in some states?
The primary concern is fire risk. Dragon’s Breath rounds launch burning incendiary particles at extreme temperatures — the Super Dragon® burns at over 5,000°F — that can easily ignite dry vegetation, structures, and other combustible materials. States with high wildfire risk (like California) or dense urban environments (like New Jersey and New York) have banned them as a fire safety measure. Florida’s ban specifically classifies Dragon’s Breath as an “exothermic pyrophoric misch metal” projectile designed to throw flame or fireballs.
Do I need a license to buy Dragon’s Breath ammo?
No. In states where Dragon’s Breath is legal, it is sold as standard shotgun ammunition. You must be at least 18 years old to purchase shotgun ammunition under federal law. No special permits, licenses, or background checks beyond standard ammunition purchase requirements are needed.
Safety and Practical Stuff
Is Dragon’s Breath good for home defense?
No. Absolutely not. We cannot stress this enough. Dragon’s Breath rounds have essentially zero ballistic stopping power. There is no solid projectile. The burning particles can cause burns, but they will not reliably stop a threat the way buckshot or a slug will. Additionally, firing Dragon’s Breath indoors will fill the room with burning metallic particles, potentially igniting furniture, curtains, carpeting, and anything else in the vicinity. You would literally be setting your own house on fire. For home defense, use standard buckshot or slugs. For Dragon’s Breath, use it outdoors, in safe conditions, for its intended purpose: visual entertainment and pyrotechnic display.
Can Dragon’s Breath start a fire?
Yes. That is, in fact, the entire point. The Super Dragon® launches burning incendiary particles at temperatures exceeding 5,000°F. They will ignite dry grass, brush, leaves, paper, fabric, and essentially any combustible material they contact. This is not a theoretical risk — Dragon’s Breath has been documented as the cause of actual wildfires. Always shoot Dragon’s Breath in a fire-safe environment with no dry vegetation within at least 100 yards in all directions. Have a fire extinguisher or water source immediately available. Never shoot Dragon’s Breath during burn bans or drought conditions.
What safety precautions should I follow?
Only fire outdoors in an area clear of combustible materials for at least 100 yards in all directions.
Have a fire extinguisher, water hose, or large water source immediately available before firing a single round.
Never fire in dry conditions, during burn bans, or in areas with active fire risk.
Wear eye protection. Burning particles can deflect off hard surfaces.
Wear hearing protection. The report from a 12 gauge shell is damaging to hearing regardless of payload type.
Never fire Dragon’s Breath at people, animals, vehicles, or structures.
Never fire Dragon’s Breath indoors under any circumstances.
Check and comply with all local fire codes and discharge regulations before shooting.
How hot does Dragon’s Breath burn?
Generic Dragon’s Breath rounds from other manufacturers typically burn at approximately 3,000 to 4,000 degrees Fahrenheit. The Phoenix Rising Super Dragon® burns at over 5,000 degrees Fahrenheit, thanks to our proprietary incendiary compound. For perspective: paper ignites at 451°F, wood at approximately 500°F, and most fabrics at around 400 to 500°F. The Super Dragon® is hot enough to ignite virtually any organic material on contact — and it is noticeably more intense than anything else on the market.
Pop Culture and Fun Stuff
Was Dragon’s Breath in John Wick 4?
Yes. One of the most iconic scenes in John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023) features Keanu Reeves using Dragon’s Breath rounds during an apartment fight sequence. The scene was inspired by the 2019 video game Hong Kong Massacre and was reportedly almost cut from the film before director Chad Stahelski realized how visually spectacular the Dragon’s Breath effects were on camera. After the movie’s release, Dragon’s Breath ammunition saw a massive spike in sales across the industry. Fun fact: this was not Keanu Reeves’ first on-screen encounter with Dragon’s Breath — a similar weapon concept appeared in Constantine (2005).
Is Dragon’s Breath in any video games?
Dragon’s Breath ammo appears across dozens of popular video games. Some of the most notable include Call of Duty: Black Ops (which features a “The Dragon Within” achievement), Call of Duty: Modern Warfare series (as a shotgun attachment), Fortnite (as the Dragon’s Breath Shotgun), Hunt: Showdown, Minecraft (as a collectible item), and Rise of the Tomb Raider. The video game exposure has been a massive driver of real-world interest in Dragon’s Breath ammunition.
Why is Dragon’s Breath so popular?
Three words: it looks incredible. There is genuinely no other civilian-legal ammunition that produces a visual effect anywhere close to Dragon’s Breath. Firing a Super Dragon® round at dusk or nighttime is an unforgettable experience — a 200+ yard plume of white-hot sparks erupting from your shotgun barrel like something out of an action movie. Add viral YouTube and TikTok content, the John Wick 4 boost, and the sheer novelty factor, and you have a product that generates organic interest unlike anything else in the ammunition market.

Bonus Round: Quick-Fire Answers
Can Dragon’s Breath kill someone?
The burning particles can cause severe burns and potentially ignite clothing, but Dragon’s Breath has essentially zero ballistic stopping power. It is not designed or marketed as an anti-personnel round. It is a pyrotechnic novelty round.
What choke should I use?
Improved cylinder or modified choke. Do not use a full choke — the tighter constriction can cause excess pressure and erratic performance with Dragon’s Breath payloads.
Can I use Dragon’s Breath in a semi-auto shotgun?
You can fire it, but the low recoil impulse of Dragon’s Breath rounds usually will not cycle a semi-automatic action. Plan to manually rack the action after each shot. Pump-action, break-action, and bolt-action shotguns are the recommended platforms.
How should I store Dragon’s Breath ammo?
Store Dragon’s Breath in a cool, dry location away from direct heat sources and sunlight, the same as any other ammunition. The pyrotechnic compounds are stable under normal storage conditions and have a long shelf life when kept properly.
Is Dragon’s Breath the same as a flamethrower?
No, but we understand the comparison. A flamethrower projects a sustained stream of burning fuel. Dragon’s Breath produces a single burst of burning metallic particles that lasts approximately one to two seconds. The visual effect is similar at a glance, but the mechanism, duration, and range are completely different. If you actually want a flamethrower, Phoenix Rising also sells those — check out our XM42 lineup.
